Teacher’s Cognitive Knowledge and Impact on Academic Performance of Students
Fundamentally, the perception of teaching is based on the process of imparting knowledge and skills required from master to the learner. If a child learns through what he/she experiences, the depth of his/her involvement in the event will determine the depth of his/her knowledge; John Stone, (2002).
There is no gain saying English Language exposes students to so many opportunities and skills including boldness, ability to express one’s feeling without fear or intimidation. Thus, teachers of English Language must possess certain qualities that will have great impact on the good academic performance of students in this subject.
According to Teibo, (2003) success in education and students’ good academic performance depend on quality of teachers handling the various subjects at all levels. And since English Language is one of the Core Subjects, its teaching thus requires knowledgeable, competence, skillful and professionally trained teachers. This will give room for adequate delivery of the content elements and better understanding and learning of the subjects on the part of the students.
Blackely (1981) basing his study on Hole’s Pyramid of leadership describes teacher as consultants, facilitators, leaders, community leader and educator as well as learning specialists. Hence, the need for appreciable cognitive kindly on the the party of the teacher especially on English Langauge teacher can never be overemphasized.
Therefore, a knowledgeable and competentteacher starts working from:
i. Known to unknown
ii. Concrete to abstract
iii. Small scale to large scale
iv. Descriptive definition to explanation and
v. Simple to complex
In addition, the teacher’s in-depth knowledge of the subject matter will enable him to break complex topics such as rainfall, origin of man, weather and climate, scientific/evolutionary theory and social interations into teachable, measurable and learnable terms thereby hard facts of knowledge are not manipulated. This will give students deep insight into life situations and natural events as they unfold from the time past.
Furthermore, studies on teacher’s act by Oladotun, (2004) revealed that many English Language teachers are not well prepared to handle the subject as expected of them. Even, some do not major in the subject, but due to insufficient teachers in most schools, especially private end up as English Language teachers. Therefore, teacher’s competency matters a lot in the adequate delivery and teaching of English Language so that good academic performance on the part of students will be attained.
