How Motivational Skill Affect Students Academic Performance
The issue of motivation of students in education and its impacts on academic performance of students are considered as an important aspect of effective learning.
In its literary meaning, motivation is the process of arousing or attracting movement in the individuals towards the achievement of some goals. Thus, it is this movement that organizes and assists the individuals to move to wards personal goals or target interest, David (2002).
Tella, (2003) define motivation as all those inner-striving conditions described as wishes, desires, drives and so on that directs one’s behavior towards a goal.
Generally, human being are said to be extrinsically or intrinsically motivated intrinsic motivation is said to be derived internally while extrinsic motivation is incentive or reward that a person can enjoy after he/she finishes a particular task.
Okoye, (2003) opined that motivation holds the key to effective learning and satisfactory school learning especially social studies as a subject is unlikely to take place in the absence of adequate motivation. That is why Hall, (2002) asserted that it is highly important to motivate students so as to arouse and sustain their interest.
According to Gesinde, (2002) he argued that students’ interest when aroused towards high achievers such as past political teachers like late Obafemi Awolowo, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alvan Ikoku, Herbet Macaulay and so on as their models, they would develop the high need to achieve.
Also, Daniels (2001) stated that when a learning activity is designed with its central feature being an admired situation experience or individual, it would go a long way in motivating students to perform well in social studies.
Gamong, (2004) submitted that students have spontaneous interest in play activities that are connected to the subject matter have serious impacts on the students’ academic performance.
The desire to explore, to investigate, to know and to learn is one of the basic needs of student thereby making out to manipulate, to construct and to solve problems.
In addition, Yoloye (2004) asserted that motivation holds the key to students’ better performance especially when interesting method and strategies are used during teaching-learning situation. The use of interesting methods such as problem solving method, inquiry method, socialized recitation or discussion methods, simulation games, case studies, role playing, practicalization, dramatization method (phonemic s) demonstration, excursion to important places, resource people interviews and so on during teaching learning process make students active, investigative and adventurous as much as possible.
Also, George (2004) observed that interesting methods/strategies during instruction always enhance students’ intelligence, cognitive styles, personality traits and other characteristics such as self esteem, love and affection.
Philips (2004) also buttressed that interesting methods make students to work hard when they perceive a reasonable chance to succeed with the motivating strategies and teacher’s encouragement.
