Effects of Instructional Materials on Students’ Academic Performance
Effects of Instructional Materials on Students’ Academic Performance
Teaching involves a teacher, a learner facts, information and a skills to be imparted. But for learning to take place adequately, the task lies on the teacher to make his/her teaching practical and fully illustrated with good and relevant instructional materials.
According to MC Combs (2001), instructional materials are any specifically prepared drawings, models, motion pictures, illustrations, film strips or other devices that will expedite learning through the sense of sight. The use of any of these materials make the work of the teacher easier, provided they are used with some degree of competence, he added.
Philips (2004), identified three categories of instructional materials. They are:
i. Reading materials: Thse include text books, magazines, encyclopedia, periodicals, journals, newspapers and pamphlets.
ii. Audio visual materials: These are of different categories. They include models, sound films, objects or specimens, slides, motion pictures, tape recorder, picturews, photographs, disagrams, film, strips, graphic representations such as charts, atlases, cartoons etc. Others are slide projector, overhead projector, tracing table and so on.
iii. Community resources: These includes experts in various fields that can give useful information that are relevant to teaching learning process.
Chauhan (2003), submitted that the use of programmed learning texts concrete objects, encyclopedia models, charts pictures, photographs or any other graphic representations during lessons enhance pleasurable experience and motivate learners a lot. He also added that the use of instructional devices make the lesson pracrtical and afford the students the opportunity to participate actively:
In the view of Adewoyin (2001), with the use of relevant materials, teachers can enhance their communication, stimulate learning interest, widen their horizon, deepen their knowledge, diversity their method/strategy, teach thousands of learners at the same or differences and time, make education to become more purposeful, more productive, more individualized and more concrete. He added that the use of audiovisual media in the teaching of English Langauge will enable the teacher top teach effectively and this bring out a good outcome from the teaching learning process.
Bodam (2002), argued that formal learning in school is built around activities and for effective and productive teaching process, appropriate instructional devices should be used to enhance good performance of students. The reason being that learning materials aid retention of information especially in some difficult topics in English Langauge. Also instructional materials attract and hold attention assist in forming correct images about what has been learnt and help to develop the continuity of thought.
As a matter of fact, putting in place relevant instructional devices during English Language lessons will make students’ expectations to be measured bu coming out with good predictions in their grades especially in their junior West Africa Examination.
