Teacher’s, being the in loco parenti of pupils while in school has resulted to a tremendous change in the life of a pupil i.e. they stand as parents to pupils while in school. Pupils being children, also see them as parents from whom they receive instructions, guidance, counsel, obey commands and generously expect care and fun. These put together help in the outstanding academic performance of children.
According to John C. Maxwell (1993), “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. He also explained that this is why we, as adults seldom remember what our teachers said to us but we do remember how they care and loves us. This is much applicable to pupils due to their tenderness. It has also been said that children who are well cared for usually possess a very good and strong self image that makes them emerge as stars academically. Of course as we all know, it is impossible to perform consistently in a manner inconsistent with the way we see ourselves. Nothing is more difficult to accomplish than changing outward actions without changing in ward feelings.
Hence, pupils due to their tenderness deserve the ‘soft-side’ of a tender care and love from a female teacher who can best express this to them.
Most children run to their mother for care and love and must not be deprived of this even while in school. Students at their teenage level find it more comfortable sharing their private and personal challenges which could affect them academically with the female teachers than the male counterpart. The female teachers, on the other hand, who have also gone through similar experience of the female student will be in the better position to help the child out.
Students are in their formative stage, therefore it takes real wisdom to handle this sensitive period of their lives. They are prone to doing things and assume everything they do is right. They tend to grasp the negative attitude faster and discard the positive attitude. The academic nature in them tends to guide them into wrong behavior. In addition, children can be very naughty and their heart is full of foolishness. Therefore, they also demand the “hard-side” of a male teacher to put them aright.
Most times, the “carrot-stick approach” can be more effectively practicable by the male teacher than the female counterpart. There is a saying, “spare the rod, spoil the child” that is very true in training a child since children will want to always do what they want uninterruptedly, they have to be corrected with an iron hand and made to do the right thing always. The behavior or attitude of students has a great effect on their academic performance, hence the molding stage of children must be taken with all seriousness as the male teachers can help in playing the role of a father over them while in school. The school is meant to be home away from home where children should desire to be. Teachers are the parents of students while at school.
Therefore the gender of teachers significantly has a great effect in the academic performance of students.
